I am wanting to learn how to create a module in VS 2005 for DNN so I downloaded the starter kit, opened VS and created a website selecting DotNetDuke Web Application Framework. Set up all the stuff, ran the without debug and got a successful install. When I go to the portal I get this message:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

WHen you got the error message where you possibly trying to open the site using the Visual Studio Server (Cassini) rather than iIS?  It appears that the error is due to it not finding a portal alias for the URL.

If you installed via IIS your URL would have been something like http://localhost/(YourVirtualDirecotry) When browing with the VS Server there is a port number added....and you would need to add a second portal alias for the default portal for it to work properly.

Mitchel,

When I add the second portal alias what do I specify as the URL?

Thanks, Chris

Mitchael,

Opening directly from within VS through Cassini worked. I will try adding an alias and test IIS.

Now I've another problem that maybe you have insite on. I added all the modules in DNN and have gone into VS to add the Simple Module http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN_ShowMeThePages/Super_Simple2.htm

When I build the site I get these error messages:
Error 1 File 'EditEntry.ascx.vb' was not found. C:\websites\DNNModules\DesktopModules\Blog\EditEntry.ascx 1 63 C:\websites\DNNModules\

Error 7 Validation (XHTML 1.0 Transitional): This name contains uppercase characters, which is not allowed. C:\websites\DNNModules\DesktopModules\Blog\EditEntry.ascx 16 20 C:\websites\DNNModules\

I am not sure where to go from here.

Thanks for your help, Chris

There are definate issues with the proxy included with visual studio, at least with the installation wizard (logged one here: DNN-5504).

Note to add a portal alias, say your domain name is: http://www.domainname.com, you enter in portal alias: www.domainname.com

If you are running locally then http://mydomain alias is mydomain. Don't forget to add your domain name to the hosts file (generally as 127.0.0.1), but no need if you are using localhost as the domain name (http://localhost/whatever becomes localhost/whatever as an alias).

Suggest you use IIS anyway.
