After reading your most recent post, Terp, I'd suggest Form Master over Enterprise Forms at this point. I license and use both. I think XMod may take you longer to learn, but that you can probably do the same thing and more down the road.

Thanks again.  The out-of-the-box fill-in-the-blank and select the type (dropdown, radio, et al) is important at this point, so I'll look at the two again (and perhaps peak at the XMod site again for some demos and the like), but I haven't the time right now to learn much more in addition to DNN in and of itself.  ;)  ...just had our first child, 4 hour commute each day, on the train platform at 4:55am, etc, etc, etc...so have to kill myself staying up to 4:00am each weekend trolling the forums and reading other sources online.  :)

Universal List, Indoo Grid, and Module Builder are all ones I have been keeping my eye on as they all work with sql tables. Universal List is looking pretty good but will only work with the DNN database (rumors are they will fix this soon). The advantage to Module Builder is that you can build modules and use them on as many hosts/sites as you'd like. The down side to these three is their display/tag capabilites are not nearly as good as Xmod.

I just tried the Indoo Grid, and while it was easy to figure out basic setups, it did seem quite lacking on the input side, much more lacking than some of the other more pure form modules...guess the display grid is their claim to fame.  It was okay and could even suffice for a few months, but textbox and drop-down are the only field options...no control over spacial layout, it seems.  I even downloaded the manual and went through the whole thing just to ensure I didn't miss anything.

I'd like to say thanks very much for the contributors of this post. I found it helpful, objective and gave me some good tips and thoughts for some projects I'm working on where we are implementing forms and sometimes I don't have the time to experiment and test them all, so this is one of my favourite posts for June!

I appreciate the time you spent sharing your views.

Geez Terp...... I thought I had it bad. I hope that is 4 hours total and not one way.  I've only got 3 hours total but at least you have the train this $3.50 gas is killing me.

pmichael - very nice post on EF. I have been wanting to add that one to my toolbox but have been waiting till I had a project that needed workflow or question/answer rather than the typical master grid/ detail page solutions I have been building.

I am sorry Terp I neglected to mention that Xmod does have an automatic forms layout option where all you do is click options and type text for the field titles/labels. It does have quite a few clickable options (alt row styles, font styles, quite a few field types, etc.) but it also has it's limitations such as the fact that it puts everything into one column.  I did figure out that Iron Speed Designer is a no-go with DNN - too bad - very nice product and easy.

Nina - Wow, never thought I would get the opportunity to give somthing back for all of your posts that have helped me so much since starting with DNN!

Yea, round trip.  ;)  It's 1.5 hours on paper, but the train never runs on time, unlike public transportation in Europe. This is why I am hoping uploading a site created locally isn't going to be problematic, as I get some good time in creating my site on the train.

If it doesn't, than I suspect the learning curve will have to wait until a future release and until I get a few of these sites finished...all is pretty polished except for the main component of the site--the db of records and the ability to query those records.  ;) Well, and some cosmetic changes to the skin (like moving the privacy and copyright and the like to the very bottom and putting string of links that mirror the navigational menu on top in their place, etc).

I requested a copy of the manual for DukeDK/ListX...they more code in their than DiVinci, so I think I can rule those out for now, too, based on the foreign language I say, though pretty intuitive, in the pages.

I keep looking at that Dynamic Forms again and again, as it looks the easiest to get going, simple to get the forms customized, to include the layout (not all stacked on top of one another), but the report is really, really weak looking.  I wonder if I can still use it to get the data in the DB, then use the report module or purchase a cheap module for the reporting functionality I need...the search continues.

To now, Dynamic Forms and Forum Master appear to be my best options for quick deployment...reviewing the thread again to ensure I've researched all the other great suggestions I have received.

I agree, Nina proved helpful in giving me an honest perspective of DNN in another thread I posted, though with a cost.  I'm staying away from that one, Nina, so don't think I didn't appreciate your comments.  As you can probably tell by now, I didn't want all my time invested into DNN to be for naught, so I decided to stick around for awhile (though that other thing we were talking about has a myriad of free extensions that do precisely what I am trying to do).
