Mitchel,

Thank you again for all your help.

1. As far as .bak file is concerned, my hosting service is charging $149 for one time backup file.

2. How much approx time can I assume for whole upgrade from 3.0.13 to 3.3.5 to 4.5.x.

3. I have access only to my www root directory and database (read only)

Let me know your advise (If any)

My first recommendation is to move to a different hosting provider!  You should be able to obtain a .bak file of your data for FREE as it is your data.

Regarding number two, the upgrade time really depends on your FTP transfer speeds if you are doing it directly on the hosting provider.  But It shouldn't take more than an hour....

Regarding the access that you have, access to the root is all you need for the file system, the database you need to ensure that the username that DNN is using has "DBO" rights (Most likely it does if you are able to currently add users/modules/etc..).

I personally really like to try the upgrade at least a few times locally as you never know what is going to go wrong.  In your case I do see that you are in an interesting overall situation with limited access to a database backup.

If you do decide to just try the upgrade, I would make 100% sure that your hosting provider does have a backup from a previous time that you can revert to..

As Mitchel says, consider changing hosts!

But hoping this might help you... Microsoft has a free package you can get which does easy backups, called Microsoft SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard.  Might do the trick for you, but if you need to restore any back-ups you might also want to find out from your host the costs as sounds like they want to squeeze revenue out of their customers.

I also use SQL Server Management Express, also free from Microsoft and can backup using that, but onto the hosted server only... my host is happy to move it though at no charge.

A backup like this literally takes minutes to sort so I find it hard to see how they can justify those charges. I also have limited access to the SQL Server but both of these have worked well for me.

Hopefully, this is the correct place to ask this question.

1. I have downoaloaded all the content in my production site to my local machine.

2. I backed up my production SQL Server table and restored it on my local machine.

3. I created a virtual folder in IIS to point to the folder where my website reside on my local machine.

4. I gave ASPNET full control over the folder.

5. I changed my portal alias to be localhost/dotnetnukeprod

So, when I go into my browser and type in localhost/dotnetnukeprod it just list all the files in the directory and not run the site.  What am I missing?  Thanks.

davidtoohey,

Thanks a ton!!!!. This package from Microsoft is awesome and I was able to successfully back-up .sql file on my local server.

Only question that arise is does this publishing wizard back-up whole database or only tables. My interest here is I need to back-up all objects, stored procedure, functions, etc and then only I can test it on local server.
