I am upgrading my website from Dnn 3.0.13 on our live server, but before uppgrading on live server I wanted to test these things in my lab first.

So i have taken back-up of database and contents from live server and restored the database and contents on local machine

I was able to see the installation screen of DNN 3.0.13 on my local server.

But whenever I try running my website through:
http://ipaddress/virtualdirectoy it redirects to my live website. There is no way, I can get on to pages of my local machine. Everytime it redirects to live domain.

before backing up your database, add the new site addess as portal alias:

  • login as superuser ("Host")
  • go to Portals in Host menu
  • select your portal and scroll down settings page to the far end
  • add the new site address and save changes.
  • backup and restore database on new server.

Hello,

I have added this portal alias but now problem is little different. We are unable to back-up database to our local server. Our hosting service doesnt allow us to to take back-up of database. We do not have access to it. We only have access to our DotNetNuke folder in root directory.

Can I go ahead and upgrade my DNN 3.0.13 directly at hosted live server. If yes, what would be the downtime for my website ? Will it be feasible ?

What are the easy steps to udgrade from DNN 3.0.13 to DNN 4.5.4 without losing any contents ?

Open your local copy of your database (SQL Management) and navigate to the 'PortalAlias' table, add a new record with the portal being '0' and xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/virtualdirectoy.

That should do it...

jmehta,

Yes, you can directly upgrade on your hosting provider.  HOWEVER I strongly recommend testing, and re-testing on a local copy before you perform the upgrade, I also recommend doing an incremental upgrade to 3.3.5 before going to the 4.x platform.

Your hosting provider should be able to provide you a database backup file (.bak) that you can attach to your local database instance.

As for downtime during the upgrade it really depends on your FTP transfer speeds and other outside influences.

I have a very detailed upgrade guide on my website at http://www.mitchelsellers.com.

The biggest thing is to make 100% sure that you have a backup that you can restore to if something goes wrong!
