Hi all.

I really want to try out DNN for a new project, so I am trying to download DNN to be used in VS2005. I have downloaded the "Starter Kit" and installed it, but that's about as far as I am able to go.

Is'nt it ment to give me a new DNN project type? It gives me a .zip file in my Visual Web Developer template folder. Tryied to copy that into a VS2005 folder and create a new project based on that, but it does not compile...

Help: Please give me a "dummy" tuorial as how I am able to set up VB2005 for DNN.

Regards
Carsten

I suggest to have a look at the tutorials at dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com, AFAIR there is one explaining how to set up a module development environment.

If you just want to setup a portal w/o developing use the install package.

Thanks for the link! I will look at it as soon as possible.
I would however also like to have an entire portal (including source code, components etc.) in my VS2005. That's whats been causing me problems. I can't seen to make it work.

If you are just trying to get to know DotNetNuke, you don't have to go through all of that.

All that you really need to so is download the "install" version, unzip it into a directory, create and IIS virtual directory that points to the site and then browser to it.  The "wizard" will walk you through the installation, connection to a database, and the initial configuration.

You also open the install website with Visual Web Developer or Visual Studio.

And, I'll second the recommendation that you view Michael Washington's tutorials!

Hi,

Download the starter kit and run it, it's a .vsi file (DotNetNuke_04.08.04_StarterKit.vsi),

it will expand itself in proper directory under VS 2005 templates projects folder, for exp:

...\Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates\ProjectTemplates\Visual Web Developer\VisualBasic

Then run your VS (I tested it with VS 2005 with SP1 and also with VWD Express), Select:

File->New->Web Site ...

Then in the "New Web Site" window, you need to choose Visual Basic as your language

to be able to see "DotNetNuke Application Frame ... " under My Template zone in your window,

Now choose it and select a name for it and choose your location, I prefered to choose "File System"

for location with an customized name, then click on OK, it will take a few minutes, depend of your

system speed (Generally). After that, you will see the DNN page in your VS and you can build it

by Ctrl+F5,  after a while you will installation page on your Internet Explorer, You should choose

AUTO mode for installation to get the result properly and it will take a few minutes to install all the

modules and prepare the SQL and ... properly to run your portal. Hope it helps, Cheers.
