Hi All,

I am converting across from the community forums package (as in asp.net) to the DNN Forums.

One feature I like of the community forums is the ability to create roles and show forums based on putting members into roles.

In DNN forum what I have done is create 15 different forum pages for the different roles and put 15 different forums onto those pages so that I can create roles, put users into roles and then show pages based on the users role. This is because I believe that security is at the forum level in DNN and that the forum container must be editable by the role linked to the forum. At least, that's how I read the manual.

But, you never know. Before rolling out my forums I thought it was worth asking if there was any new feature that allows to present one DNN forum and show/hide parts of it based on user security emulating the community forum concept. Or have I done it the best way possible for DNN Forums?

Thanks

Peter

I would have one base module, like we do here on dotnetnuke.com (tabid 795).  I would then make forums private forums and use the roles there to restrict viewing and posting access further than what you have set at the module settings level for permissions.  If you still want to show only a group on a seperate page, use the add existing module method I outlined in the documentation.  Therefore, everything you want to do can already be done today.

Hi Crispy,

thanks for this....once set up with the edit roles on the module it all worked fine...I've converted across and the new forums seem to work (almost) ok...

(I am still getting the occasional critical error for path too long and I'll put that on another append.)

Thanks for the tip. I'm pleased to be able to bring our forums and our portal into just one tool needing just one login.

Peter

Peter's problem was one with the polling provider.  There is another post which answers this problem.
