I see by browsing the forums that quite a few people have had a problem 'upgrading' to 4.8, however none that I've found have had the same result as me.

I joined DNN at version 4.3, now have about eight sites running DNN, all have followed the upgrade path successfully,.. until now.

I have a couple of sites under development on my server that I started using 4.8 and they currently are working fine, however, I decided to go ahead and upgrade my company site yesterday that is hosted with a third party. & know I can't access my site at all!!! That is to say, when I try to open our site I get a blank page.... I mean TOTALLY blank!!! View Source!?  TOTALLY BLANK!!!!!!. I have checked the server, all files are present and accounted for, the database is still intact and can be accessed as before, so I my mind is TOTALLY BLANK of solutions. Please help asap... can Idelete all files on the server and start again without losing access to the data in my database?

have you tried to restart the application by editing your web.config file using a texteditor and adding a blank (" ") to the end of first line. Save the file and retry.

I have now. I guess I'm not putting the "" in the right place 'cos all I get is:

Server Error in '/' Application.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Configuration Error
Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request.

Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: Unrecognized element.

I've also tried different variations of "", " ", (""), (" "), as well as putting it inside the first tag at the end of the string, all return variations of the same error. Please elaborate. cheers Martyn

If you tried to upgrade from a version less than 4.6.2 then you've likely hit an error that I've personally seen.

If you can restore your working site (restore the database and the web directory), you should be able to upgrade to 4.6.2.  Once you have verified that, you can then upgrade from 4.6.2 to 4.8.

I also encountered errors while upgrading from 4.5.5 to 4.8. After editing release.config of install version of 4.8 with relevant values from my 4.5.5 version's web.config (connectionstring,InstallationDate, validationKey,decryptionKey etc.) and renaming it to web.config, then copying the 4.8 site files and folders over my existing 4.5.5 installation and running http://localhost/dotnetnuke/install/install.aspx, I get  :

Server Error in '/dotnetnuke' Application.

Parameter name: type
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: type

Source Error:

The source code that generated this unhandled exception can only be shown when compiled in debug mode. To enable this, please follow one of the below steps, then request the URL:  1. Add a "Debug=true" directive at the top of the file that generated the error. Example:  <%@ Page Language="C#" Debug="true" %>  or:  2) Add the following section to the configuration file of your application:  <configuration> <system.web> <compilation debug="true"/> </system.web> </configuration>  Note that this second technique will cause all files within a given application to be compiled in debug mode. The first technique will cause only that particular file to be compiled in debug mode.  Important: Running applications in debug mode does incur a memory/performance overhead. You should make sure that an application has debugging disabled before deploying into production scenario.

Please help. Also, it seems like http://localhost/dotnetnuke/install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade doesn't work (my autoupgrade in web.config=false). It instead returns "Site Unavailable"
