I have a module that uses an ObjectDataSource pointing to a DAL structured object.  My problem is that I have one column that is determined by which user is logged in.  If I make that column's visible property = false then 0 gets passed to that property rather than the value in the row on an edit/update.  Is this a known problem or is there a work-around for it?  I have tried forcing the value in the updating event but it hasn't worked.

it's not a problem, it's behaviour by design. The object model of the gridview is built up in memory, and if you do not include a field or mark it as visible=false, then it's not included in the object model and is not rendered. If you want values to transfer but not be visible, I recommend using the DataKeyNames property of the gridview, and then accessing it via the DataKeys collection

Cathal,

Thanks for that insight into the Gridview control.  I have searched quite a bit for good information on gridview but I have had trouble locating good info.  Your's is most helpful.  I will pursue that direction.  Since these aren't technically datakyey fields that I want to hide I haven't gone that route.

Thanks again,
