Maybe the author is right.

"Personally, I take the old rule one step further.

If I have to ask how much a piece of software costs (because the vendor gives me no other way to find out, short of calling his salesweasels) not only can I probably not afford it, but odds are pretty good the software isn't worth it, even if I could afford it."

Maybe its not uncommon but not common. It does not gain the eccosystem to do so. All insecurity will hert any market.

I would love DNN corp do great business and have great sales. But so far I think the marketing strategy is clumsy.

I have to agree with Jan -- I was very surprised that no price (or at least some broad pricing guidelines) were ready at time of launch.  Perhaps the actual push into a paid "certified" version was waiting on VC infusion (and therefore was only formalized relatively recently) but the idea of a for-purchase version -- almost certainly one of the premises that helped land VC funding in the first place -- has to have been discussed for a very long while.

My impression is that DNN Corp has had plenty of opportunity to try to guage interest and reaction to potential pricing structures and would have benefitted from having some concrete pricing information ready to share at the time of launch.  As it is, the launch without any pricing guidelines at all (will it be based on number of installations?  user base?  level of support?  etc.) gives the appearance of being rushed out without a clear plan in place.  Such an impression calls into doubt how prepared DNN Corp is to adequately provide support for paid versions.

I know that DNN Corp has been offering paid-support for a while, now, and that a "certified / supported" version of DNN basically amounts to a variation of the existing paid support plan(s).  I fear that newcomers to DNN, however, will have a negative impression of a "certified" product that seems to be available only through "tell us how you plan to use the product and we'll determine a price".  That may not be an accurate reflection of the actual pricing process but, at this point, who can tell?  I hope the pricing plan(s) are ironed out soon so DNN Corp can start earning what it needs and still keep the "community" version going strong.

DNN corp,  Please post the PE price. And add it to this forum thread. I think it looks very bad not to have a set price ready. I was looking for it on the site and could not find it.

Also, is current documentation included with a PE purchase?  The community vertion has docs fro 2006, at least for the install docs. That's pretty old. Can non-PE users buy current docs?

I believe the corporation will be releasing the price soon!

NOTE: I would like to re-iterate that there is NOTHING wrong with using CE on production, large scale environments.
