Hi.  I'm new to DNN, but have experience with ASP.net in general.

I'm trying to install DNN on a third-party host.  I've edited the connection strings in the web.config and FTPed the site to the appropriate directory on the host.  When I browse to the install page, I get a "Server Error in '/' Application." error, and the usual admonition to set customErrors to Off.  The problem is, even when I do set customErrors to Off and upload the change, I get the same error message again.  It doesn't seem to recognize the setting.

I don't have access to the event logs for the machine, since I only have FTP access.  Has anyone else seen this behavior?  Any advice on how to proceed?

Thanks,
  Andy

Sounds like either you don't have the right directory (and therefore IIS isn't respecting your web.config because it isn't in the root of the site), or you've incorrectly set the customErrors property in the web.config.  If it were me, I'd doublecheck with your host that your site is setup correctly in the place you think it is.

Do you have access to the SQL server?  Could you see if anything is being written to the DNN event log table?

Hope that helps,

The most common cause of the "CustomErrors" change not working is one of the two following.

1.) Incorrect ASP.NET Version selected.  (Must be .net 2.0 for 4.x and 5.x)

2.) Mal formed web.config file.
