For the record I have probably spent thousands of dollars at snowcovered over the years. I am a huge supporter of DNN and the community around it. But it's getting worse IMHO. For example:

I look for a skin and find one thats says in the description (empahsis is there on the site):

  • This Skin Pack is designed in Horzontal Menu Style in 12 colors.
  • 60 matching containers come with the skin including 24 professional and beautiful banner containers.

The demo site also shows all the colors.

So I buy the skin and it turns out it's really only one specific color and only 5 containers. Apparently the developer cut and pasted his description from the real multi-color pack. that obviously costs more. To me this is false and misleading. OK. I send a few tickets

Snowcovered says I need to work it out with the developer. Snowcovered says they won't refund me the money.

The developer says I can pay the difference directly to his paypal and get the multicolor pack.

Is this fair? If so, what is to prevent someone from making any claims about their product and when it fails to to as advertised, just say "too bad but you can pay extra for the advanced product we make that really has those features".

Before DotNetNuke took over Snowcovered they were always helpful and willing to take a look at the issues. Now I feel like they just want to make money at the expense of customer service.

It really isn't Snowcovered's fault, it's the developer.  If he won't provide what was described and you paid for, or refund your money, make a point of mentioning the incident and the developer whenever you have the chance to recommend a skin.

By the way, I know the developer you describe.  They have skins labeled one thing, like "Food and Beverage" with descriptions that say something different, like "This is an ideal skin for any jewelry sales site..."  I don't trust the skins.  If the developer is sloppy in their ads they are likely to be sloppy in their code.

When I bought via Snowcovered I ordered from Snowcovered, and I paid Snowcovered.

Certainly UK Law means that it's Snowcovered I have a contract with and therefore Snowcovered who are legally obliged to fulfil it.  They may *ask* the customer to go to the author, but they would remain legally the other party to the contract.  US Law may be different.

Of course a careful reading of the T's&C's (which you undoubtedly were forced to agree to) may prove them to be a bunch of shysters doing their level best to take your cash without providing any redress.

I have bought maybe 50+ modules and in the past (pre-DNN buyout) I have requested a refund maybe twice from snowcovered and each time it was honored.

What irks me is how blatant the false advertisement is. I mean I get it, if I can't get the full multi-color skin package because it costs more, but what I don't get is how they can't see the plain facts and ake a good customer serivce decision. It smells more like greed.

I used dnn a few years ago to build a site for a local city. I spent a lot of time customing and tweaking. It turned out nice. I recommended it for friends. I liked open source. I recently installed it for a friend for a scouting site. I'm very disappointed. The functionality and performance are nearly the same - slow and clunky. It's a casual site so not a big deal. However, his scouts would like to post pix. He'd like to have notifications. Basic functionality for which there were free open source modules when last I used it. At that time, you could go full pro or use the less desirable free open source modules. I go to snowcovered and the modules are rediculous. If dnn would lime to go full on professimnal then fine. Do it. But to have an open source platform and have to buy a thousand dollars worth of modules on a per site basis is silly unless you build sites for a living. As a casual developer I'm disappointed in the direction. Your post simply reinforces the downside of corporate migration. If snowcovered doesn't back ip their vendors and customers both, they will prove an unreliable collection of junk.
