If no other css files have been changed, how about changing all ocurrences of this:

BORDER: #FFF 0px solid;

To this:

 BORDER-TOP: Transparent 0px solid;
 BORDER-BOTTOM: Transparent 0px solid;
 BORDER-LEFT: Transparent 0px solid;
 BORDER-RIGHT: Transparent 0px solid;

Great suggestion!  Unfortunately it didn't work, though.  I think I will review the default.css again to see if there are any similar occurrences there I should replace.

Remember that there could be some caching that doesn't let you see the result.

Yeah, definitely; I always refresh the browser after changing a stylesheet.

I just printed out the default.css and did a side-by-side comparison and it doesn't seem there's anything I'm overlooking.  I read in a blog post yesterday, I think it was from Jon Henning, he mentioned quirky border issues with solpartmenu.  I think this might be an example of what he's talking about.

I've met with this before, but failed to document how I solved it. Thus I am only able to give suggestions and not solutions.

Furthermore I used also the reverse approach where I wanted to have a border around the items when the mouse hovers over them but doesn't show up when it's off.
