This one's a little outside the box...
I'm attempting to implement a solution where a DNN (5.6) portal and a SharePoint 2010 application share the DNN membership store.

The problem I've struck is around the passwordFormat of the membership provider in DNN.

My question is. Is it possible to change the passwordFormat in the membership provider to clear, or create a non-autogenerated machineKey? and what are the implications of both actions?

Hope some-one can help with this.

cheers
MartyNZ

it's possible to select any value for it, but you can't change it for an existing site as the provider will not regenerate the passwords accordingly (and in the case of hashed passwords as it's not possible to decrypt hashed passwords)

Thanks for your response, that's what I expected so,

I have to create a new website, and manually create the machineKey in the web.config before I run the install. Is that correct?

Can you direct me to some instruction on the creation of a machine key?

cheers

Also note, the error I'm receiveing states that I cannot use an auto-generated machine key.

during creation of the database, DNN auto-generates an individual machine key. You shouldn't use a machine key provided by your hosting company, otherwise you won't be able to move your site in the future.
