Well 5 days later and still NO working solution for DNN 5.5.1 or DNN 5.6.1.

I have read and done every possible thing to get a clean install going, and I give up. Is there anywhere we can go to get paid support to help out in getting this problem taken care of. I cannot spend anymore days trying to simply do something i have done hundreds of times for other DNN installs.

Same error every single time no matter what we change:

Installing Database - Version 05.00.00...FAILURE 400 - Generic failure

We have reinstalled ASP.Net 3.5 SP1, Check all Server permissions on folders, and the SQL 2005 DB has everything ready to go.

We have older installs of DNN 4.9.1 and DNN 4.4.1 running just fine on the same server and DB.

Someone, anyone please HELP us....

Matt, we can offer paid support for getting this running. You only have to pay if we get it running. Please contact me at david [at] efficionconsulting.com

Special thanks to David for taking a quick look at our server and suggesting that the high volume of Disk Activity was leading to the SQL Server connection timing out. below is what we finally did to get things working.

Below is what we did after talking with you.
  1. Deleted temp files and some logs not needed any longer.
  2. Ran the Defragmenter (2) times. 40% fragmentation this first run.
    1. This is now part of my weekly maintenance plan.
  3. Tried two more times after this and still had trouble, then I also stopped the SQL 2000 server while doing the install, and things seem to work OK after one false start with the Install wizard.
Thanks again everyone for leading us to the culprit in this week long affair.

Hey matt,

just a fyi - if your server is thrashing the drives that much you should maybe look at why this is happening ... in the context of out of memory and paging issues ... Sounds to me like your server is running out of memory and getting into a paging spiral.  From reading this - you seem to be suggesting you have IIS, SQL 2000 and SQL 2005/2008 all running on the same box.

Seeing as the install completed  after you turned off sql 2000 im - very much wondering if this was more because you free'ed up some memory in turning it off that reduced the need for memory to disk paging - as opposed to the amount of drive access reads the sql server was actually doing.

How much ram do you have on your server - and whats its utilization levels -
