Thanks for all your replies - I have managed to create a .sql script in the end from my database and have uploaded to the engineers at my hosting provider.

They in turn have managed to import this into the remote SQL server.

However now when I try to access the site, I get the dreaded

500 - Internal server error.

There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.

Here is my web.config:

</configSections>
  <connectionStrings>
    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 -->
    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=SQL01;Database=db1;uid=username;pwd=password" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
  </connectionStrings>
  <appSettings>
     <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules   -->
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=SQL01;Database=db1;uid=username;pwd=password;"/>
    <add key="InstallTemplate" value="DotNetNuke.install.config"/>
    <add key="AutoUpgrade" value="true"/>
    <add key="UseInstallWizard" value="true"/>
    <add key="InstallMemberRole" value="true"/>
    <add key="ShowMissingKeys" value="false"/>
    <add key="EnableCachePersistence" value="false"/>
    <add key="HostHeader" value=""/>
    <!-- Host Header to remove from URL so "www.mydomain.com/johndoe/Default.aspx" is treated as "www.mydomain.com/Default.aspx" -->
    <add key="RemoveAngleBrackets" value="false"/>
    <!--optionally strip angle brackets on public login and registration screens-->
    <add key="PersistentCookieTimeout" value="0"/>
    <!--use as persistent cookie expiration. Value is in minutes, and only active if a non-zero figure-->
    <!-- set UsePortNumber to true to preserve the port number if you're using a port number other than 80 (the standard)
        <add key="UsePortNumber" value="true" /> -->
  </appSettings>

Can anyone provide any pointers please?

Not sure how I can check the permissions on the remote IIS site and SQL server but if someone tells me what to check, I can submit these to my hosting provider....

Many thanks,

JG

500 is usually not an issue with database permission, please ask your hosting provider to check file system permissions and associated items in Windows event log

So the reply from the hosting company is as follows:

After our system engineers have investigated this issue they concluded that there is no server side issue that could cause those errors and they are strictly code related.

The element in the web.config defining the MSSQL database details is correct in terms of syntax. IIS isn't reading the web.config correctly however as it is stating the web.config is "not well-formed xml" - it would be worth to check the support material for dotnetnuke as this might be a common problem - or if you made lots of changes to the web.config then problems may have been caused that way.

Any ideas?

did you manipulate web.config, it needs to be valid XML to be accepted by IIS.
