Where does the newsletter module get the from email address form? I've been hunting for ages and just can't work it out

I think it gets it from the Portal Settings but did you know that in the latest version you change the from address when you type a newsletter?

I'm running 4.3 and it's still a new site with only about 50 reg users... and I've tried seemingly every combination of trying to send a bulk email to all reg users/subscribers...

Is there a fundamental trick I'm missing... other response emails function okay...
