I'd rather think this is an ftp (server) specific problem. What ftp server is being used?

To isolate if it is DNN.  When it happens next, go and touch the web.config (or use restart application in host settings) which will make the app reload and will probably release any hold on the files or folders.

For me it has nothing to do with the FTP. FTP is not being used at all. My machine and intranet server are on the same network.

I created skin, called it MySkin, uploaded it through Host admin, applied it.

Changed skin to DNN-Blue and applied it.

Chose MySkin from the drop down and selected Delete skin package.

Both dropdowns now say Skins and Containers.

MySkin is still inside the dropdown menu.

Click on Host Settings and got this under host and admin skin:

An error has occurred.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Access to the path 'C:\Intranet\Portals\_default\Skins\MySkin' is denied. ---> System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'C:\Intranet\Portals\_default\Skins\MySkin' is denied. at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String maybeFullPath) at System.IO.Directory.InternalGetFileDirectoryNames(String path, String userPathOriginal, String searchPattern, Boolean includeFiles, Boolean includeDirs, SearchOption searchOption) at System.IO.Directory.GetFiles(String path, String searchPattern, SearchOption searchOption) at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.SkinControl.LoadSkins() at DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.SkinControl.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

If I choose MySkin from the Skins dropdown I get:

A critical error has occurred.
Access to the path 'c:\intranet\portals\_default\skins\myskin' is denied.

Ok, I waited 15 minutes and it is still there.... it does eventually delete the folder and errors disappear.

I did Restart Application and skin folder is gone and things work. I'll do another run through the whole procedure to see if it wasn't just that I "waited" long enough this time.

Yes, this definitely fixes the problem right away. Delete the skin, go to host settings and restart application. That deletes the skin folder right away, skin is gone from the dropdowns and all the errors clear up.
