I have been trying for over a week to simply install the 4.3.7 starter kit on 2 different systems. I get different errors on each and neither of them continues to work after a power cycle. This apparently has to do with the webserver in Visual Studio needs to be running before I can connect to my site. So if I powwer cycle, I MUST then rebuild the site in order to see/use it. This is only marginally useful.

So then I see - NO dont setup the site in file system , we have lots of problems with that. Set it up in http and use IIS instead. Except when I try to do that, I get an error saying IE can find the site but does not have permission to access it. Great. So I know SOMEWHERE I've seen something that says 'you must do this' before dir permissions and security trab will show up so you can set permissions and security but I cant find that writeup this morning.

Further, I will be, well maybe will be at this point, developing some modules and pages etc under DNN but I cant even fathom from the install instructions whether I should use starter kit or install or source. ANd if I use starter kit, do I still need install or source? but it's a moot point because I cant get starter kit to workj usoin ewither IIS or VS.

I was going to try the free web developer but the first thing the download says is to uninstall SQL server, Visual Studio, this thing, tha thing and your first borm. I dont know if I want to start completely ocer liek that, figuring I'll just run ionto the same problems.

Ids there anyone out there who might want to help me get this stuff installed and working? I;'d surelyt appreciate it.

Did it install and then preset a link that said "Click here to access your portal" ? If so what address is giving you the 404? For example is it http://localhost/dotnetnuke ?

Also look in the Event viewer for any relevant errors.

Michael;

First, much obliged for your help.

Well short answer is no.

Long answer - I followed the procedure you recommended. Downloaded VWDE and SQL Express and 4.3.7 Install zip.

I unzipped to c:\inetpub\dotnetnuke437. In IIS I created a default web site virtual directory at c:\inetpub\dotnetnuke437. I set all the other properties as described in the procedure (here: http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN4_DevelopmentEnvironment/DNN4DevelopmentEnvironment1.htm)

The next step says "Go to the site in your web browser" and so I put http://localhost/DotNetNuke437 in the browser address field and hit go. I get back a 403 error.
