Login not Working on 4.4.1 seems to be having same/similar problem, as am I.
I installed the 4.4.1 install package on my machine which has SQLServer and IIS (to an IIS VD). The install went flawlessly and I can display the home page (http://localhost/DNNTest). I didn't change a thing.

The login reports failed attempts but seems to accept correct attempts (host/dnnhost) but just redirects back to the home page not logged in - the "login" link is still display instead of "logout".

My problem was a conflict in the web.config of the Root application, and my "quick fix" for that problem appears to be the exact cause of  trying to loging and getting sent to the home page, not logged in.

The site works fine now as a virtual directory.

That said, just for kicks...if it was me...I'de probably try something like:

Wipe and recreate the new DNN install
Wipe and recreate the DB
Temporarily rename the web.config in the root site to something odd...eliminate the possibilty of it interfering.  If the site wont run, perhaps create a new Root web with the same headers, then your Virtual Directory for DNN under that.

On another note: This is probably why I've gotten into the habit of using site names like  dnn.mysite.com  dnn2.mysite.com, rather then virtual directories.

thanks

I had tried all that to no avail.

Did a an install on the machine at work and that was ok - but I had previously applied the Starter pack on that machine..

I'll try a VirtualPC install.

I have a similar setup and problem.  My site is installed in a VD, http://www.mydomain.com/portal.  After the upgrade from 4.0.3 to 4.4.1, I got the happy link to access my site.  Everything seems to load up fine until I attempt to login.  I'm 100% sure I provided the right credentials, but I do get booted back out to the main page with an error message:

A critical error has occurred.
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Does anyone know how to fix this?  I didn't have this problem on my local machine when I tested the upgrade...  I have client portals as well.  It's just a matter of time before I get screamed at.......

Any help would be appreciated.  If anyone wants to see this in action, email me at vincent.lo@kotux.com and I'll provide you with login details.

Thanks in advance!

Some additional stack trace info from the error message would help.  Might check and flag the web.config to debug=true,  and see if you get some more info.

"Object not set to an instance ....blahblahblah"  is a fairly generic error...nearly impossible to guess the problem without more info.
