Is it possible to install DNN 3.2 to a folder that is not configured as an application in IIS?

After I placed the web.config in the root (www.xyz.com), I got the following config error when I tried to install DNN:

Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

Source Error:

Line 62: <customErrors mode="Off" />
Line 63: <!-- Forms or Windows authentication -->
Line 64: <authentication mode="Forms">
Line 65: <forms name=".DOTNETNUKE" protection="All" timeout="60" />
Line 66: </authentication>

Thanks for any help!!!

Every DNN install must be an application in IIS.  You can only have one DNN install in a virtual directory/webserver because the way DotNetNuke handles child portals.  Is there anything specific you are trying to accomplish in doing things this way?

Chris --- Thanks. Turned out to be a simple fix; I asked the Hoster to make 'portal' an IIS application.

I'm using this approach b/c my client already has non-DNN web content on the root, so I wanted to have DNN in its own folder structure.
