The problem sound like that the portal 0 is not created while the installation process.

Please check whether the portal 0 exists under the sub folder portals of your dnn installation.

I was finally (on the third install, after the provider moved me to full trust) able to bring up portal 0.  However, when I attempt to add a child portal, I now get the following error in the log.

Only for my understanding, that means the default portal works now?

Sort of.  It is up, and I can use most of it's functions.  However, it often throws Object reference not set to an instance of an object.  In particular, it fails when creating a new portal.

Sorry but it doesn't make sense to try anything like create child portal or whatever if the default portal is not running without errors.

You need first a full working default installation.

I even believe that you have:

a) a problem with your folder permission

b) that in order of these permission problem the installation finished not correctly.

I have installed DNN so many times and all my experience is, that if the portal doesn't install correct with the first try, the only way is correct the missing settings or whatever then delete the database and remove the installation and start the installation from the beginning:

I am having the same issuses, it works then it doesn't work, it's real flakey. I am on my local box and I gave the ASPNET account modify permissions on my wwwroot folder and the children, any suggestions on what I am missing? I think I am on my fifth or sixth install.
