Ok, I am frustrated. Yes, I admit. I have been having "fun" with trying to install DNN for the last two days.

But guys, cmon, can you release something which is actually WORKING???

I am not a newbie, have been running DNN 3.x for our home site for years. But the 4.x is a POS. Is it so difficult to make a simple install script? If you code something this complex, whats the point if 80% of the potential users cannot install it?

Here is a short story.

First I tried a CLEAN instal of DNN 4.4.1 with MS SQL 2000, on a subdomain. (eg test.domain.com). No matter what I didm it would not connect to the SQL server. Tried installinf SQL Express 2005 on the same server, same thing. Whole day wasted.

Fine, today I see 4.5 is released... Hoooray, it has an install wizzard. Great.

Configure it with SQL Express 2005...Great it connects (with the same config 4.4.1 would NOT connect, so I am not crazy after all), but my joy is quickly gone, after populating the database, the install wizzard gets stuck on that step, and would not go on. even if I connect next, re-fills the database, returns "undefined", and thats it. GRRRRRRRRRR.

Ok, fine, I reconfigure the script with a setup of MS SQL 2000 MSDE on the same server, restart the WWW service, run the install script again. Ok, seems to owrk fine...Connects...But wait. At "configure database connection" part I get this:

Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 16
Number: 208
Message: Invalid object name 'Version'.

Index #: 1
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 16
Number: 208
Message: Invalid object name 'Version'.

And it would not continue...ARGHHHH. Am I a complete looser? Damn, I administer 5 windows servers, and has been for like 15 years since NT server. Ok, not an ASP coder, but this?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Bela

80% of potential users cannot install it?  Uh... where are these stats published?  Sounds like you are just frustrated, and I can understand your frustration, if you've been trying to install for 2 days w/o luck.  However, I can tell you that most of any errors I encountered testing installation, were due to my lack of attention to detail, not actually errors caused by DNN.

Now, it would be helpful for folks who care to help you, if you could soften the tone a bit, and give some details regarding your installation environment.  For example, I always test installations on my local workstation, running XP Pro SP2, IIS 5.0, ASP.Net v2.0.  With DNNv4.5, I had no trouble installing, after taking care to read, and follow the installation prerequisites in the ReadMe.txt.  I was able to install in under 18 minutes.  Am I lucky?  No, just following an installation workflow, the same as I would for any of my other apps that I support, like Citrix, Windows Server 2003, and various others.   I can tell you DNN is much more simple to install than any number of apps I have to install for use with Citrix.

At this point, I am confused about what installation script you are using on your DNNv4.x whatever.  Can you give some detail on that piece.  Also, I can speak for my involvement with DNN over the course of a few years, and know that all version of DNN have their own installation quirks due to the number of variances in installation environments, but generally, folks help posters, and several community members have sites with a lot of helpful info regarding installation, so I wouldn't go 2 days trying w/o consulting with the community.   All setup environments are not created equally, so at the risk of repeating myself - supply some details.   Another word of advice, download the latest version of the DNN Installer, which specifically is engineered to install DNNv04.04.01.  I used a previous version, and it did exactly what it said it would do - install the DNN version.  Again, I'm installing on a local workstation, so that's what I would suggest starting out to understand the process, and move on from there.

Cheers
