Hello DNN world,

We just signed up with Alentus to host our site and to also have them load DNN.   We ended up going with 4.0, however, it seems that most of the world is on 3.x.  So, here are a few questions I'm hoping someone can assist with:

1) Is 4.0.0 stable and if not, should I upgrade to the latest (I believe 4.0.1) or should I blow out the site and reload 3.x?

2) Is 4.0.0 backward compatable with the 3.x modules (core and 3rd party)?

3) We have a great graphic artist who is in desperate need of some guidance in adopting his graphics to some pre-existing skins - we need help - if you have experience, please call/email me.

Thanks,

Russ Edelman

Hi Russ,

1) I find the decision between v4 and v3 a difficult one. – To be honest, for any web design clients I set them up with DNN v3.1 on ASP.NET 1.1 because it is the last stable release of DNN. – DNN Creative is still running on v3.1

I’m not going to upgrade to V3.2 until there have been several more point upgrades and the release is fully stable.

If you are going to use V4 I would upgrade to the latest V4.0.2 – This should have fixed a few errors. – V4.0.1 caused several errors, but V4.0.2 should have fixed those new errors.

If you are going to use V4 I would recommend that you test, test, test – I haven’t used it yet so I can’t make any recommendations.

2) I don’t know if 3.x modules are compatible with 4.x – generally they should be, but there are no guarantees, I would advise that you download some free 3.x modules and test them on a 4.x localhost installation to see how they react.

3) I don’t know anyone that does the consulting work, but this is something I could consider for you. I guess we could do it via skype, I’m open to any suggestions. – But, you may also be interested in the latest videos that I am about to release in issue 5 & 6 – I’m going to do a double release as there is so much content.

Here’s 2 of the videos which you maybe interested in (still editing the pages, so please bear this in mind if things move about while you are viewing the page!), there is a total of 16 videos related to skinning which I am about to release in the next few days.
