I have done an upgrade of 4.4.x to 4.5.1 and the upgrade seems to have worked flawlessly.  My question is if it is possible to upgrade a production 2.x version to 4.5.1?  As I understand 2.x runs on the .NET 1.1 framework and 4.5.1 runs on the .NET 2.0 framework, so is it even possible or do I have to create a new DNN 4.5.1 install and migrate content over from the old site?  If is possible to upgrade my 2.x site, are there any special things I need to do in the upgrade process that would differ from a normal upgrade such as the one I have completed before?

Yes you can do the migration, however, I would recommend doing it in a phased approach with a few intermediate upgrades.

I can't remember the versions specifically for 2, however I would go to the latest version of 2.x, then to 3.3.7, Then go to 4.5.1

Overall the upgrade process is the same as normal, except that when going from 3.3.7 -> 4.5.1 you must be sure to change the ASP.NET version for your virtual directory to use ASP.NET 2.0

One thing I cannot stress enough is to BACKUP your files and database before you start!!  There is some inherit risks invloved with migration from older systems and with upgrades in general.

i would even start with the first available dnn 3 upgrade: 2.x -> 3.0.13. Even then, changes are things will not work DNN 3.0 was a BIG breaking change from DNN 2.x. Skins are not compatible, custom modules are not compatible, upgrade from core modules is not guaranteed... Depending on the size of your site, it might be a good alternative to just rebuild from scratch. ....
