Hi Folks

I'd like to be prepare to make an upgrade of my DNN installation. one of my site have the dnn 4.4.1 and I'd like to make the upgrade to the 4.5.1 (or 4.5.2 if available). I have quite 'bad' experiece doing the upgrade to my main site (from 4.4.1 to 4.5.1). The problem is my host is WH4L, and the site is running all times.

Of course I made a full backup (Source and Database), The upgrade process was hard because my ftp account is slow... so during the upload process, people hit my website... and many problem shows up...Finally I did it ok...

Now I want to be prepare...Is there a way to make the website OFF-LINE... (then I will able to upload all the new source code). How people do the upgrade in the real-world?... Maybe I just need to shutdown the IIS Service, but no idea how to do that in WH4L?

 Thanks,

Alfonso

Add file App_Offline.htm to your site root.  This will take disable your site when calling default.aspx.  But you can still go to www.abc.com/install/install.aspx to do your upgrade.  This is what I do on WH4L.

Put whatever content you want users to see while your upgrade is in progress.  When complete, remove/rename file.

If you search web, there are a lot of articles about this.

As mentioned above you can use the app_offline.htm file to take the site offline...but I have a few notes about that.

TO actually perform the install you must remove the app_offile.htm file as it is not possible to do ANYTHING with ASP.NET when that files is in your virtual directory.

I also recommend turning off "Auto Upgrade" to ensure that you are the one triggering the update.

On my blog site http://www.mitchelsellers.com I have a very detailed tutorial for upgrading that covers all of these topics and many more.
