hi,

I already got it running but when I tried to login this error appeared:

Unhandled Error

Error Details

File
Error   Failed to update database "C:\INETPUB\WWWROOT\DOTNETNUKE_04.05.01_INSTALL\APP_DATA\DATABASE.MDF" because the database is read-only.

I check the App_Data Folder and found out that it is set to Read Only, I uncheked it and click on the apply it worked, but when I right clicked on the folder again, the Read Only checked is again enabled. What could have caused this?

Need help please.

Regards,

Bryan

SQL Server Express database is read-only

Using SQL Server 2005's new XCopy deployment it is possible to attach a database at runtime without the need to manually register it within a first step, which is especially useful for web applications that are run in shared hosting environments.

A common problem that can arise in this situation is the message "Failed to update database 'App_Data\Database.mdf' because the database is read-only.". If you then take a look at the App_Data folder you will see that the file is not read-only at all - so what is wrong?

When a web site tries to access a SQL Server Express database for the first time, it is attached automatically. This is done by using the ACL of the user the current process is run under - that means, on Windows XP this is the ASPNET user, on Windows Server 2003 this is the NT-AUTHORITY\NETWORKSERVICE user. So, all you have to do to avoid this error is to set the MDF and LDF files' security settings so that these users are allowed to write. Note that this step must be done when the database is not attached.

As soon as you rerun your web application again, the database is not attached read-only any more and you are able to run INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE queries :-).
