Has anyone been able to install DNN 4.7 on a shared 1and1 MS Business hosting account such that it's stable?  I've tried all the tricks listed in these forums (changing tempDirectory to point into the DNN application directory, moving the clean installation to root, modifying DNN source files, etc.) repeatedly, but never get a stable installation.

Don't get me wrong, DNN 4.7 installs without error EVERY time, but when I try to use it, I get the dreaded System.FileIO permission errors seemingly randomly.

Is 1and1 just a lost cause?

Not yet. I just tried to install 4.7 myself and I have what looks to be trust/permission issues upon clicking the login button (see my post from yesterday, 11.26.2007).  I installed my version into an application sub-directory (per the 4.3.3 guide at 1&1) with full read/write permissions etc.  I think the install needs to be in a sub-dir because you have to give the directory special privleges which you evidently cannot do in the root. If you are not getting the HOME DNN screen, make sure that the sub-directory is set as an "application" and that the directory has full read/write security using the 1&1 web file manager.

Version 4.3.3 seems to have worked OK at 1&1 so I am assuming that some 4.7 features violate the restrictins that 1&1 has set per its shared hosting and or 1&1s "medium trust" setting for the site is not sufficient for DNN.

I'll be pursuing this for awhile as this is the first real .NET issue I have run into with 1&1. Let me know if you find out anything as well.

It sounds like the file permissions just need to be set for the directory.  I would contact their support to see if they will grant full permissions to the ASP.NET Worker process.

Thanks for the reply, but 'Full' permissions for both the IUSR_machine and Network Service accounts have been applied to the application directory prior to install in each case.  I agree it's a permissions issue, but it shouldn't be within the application directory.  I think maybe appropriate permissions on the ASP.NET Temp directory have not been set by 1and1.

Thanks again, though.

JVS,

I've done everything you have (and everything else I could think of), but to no avail. Whenever I install to a subdirectory, I can configure 4.7, install/remove modules, templates, skins, etc.  However, from time to time (seemingly at random), I'll get the System.Permission.FileIO nonsense and be SOL for a bit.

Admittedly, the procedure to move the installation from the subdirectory to the root never worked for me -- although, ALL the requisite permissions are retained in the move.  The root directory issue is one of a 'Null Reference' error (rather than the FileIO error), possibly due to the use of 'default' page skins, rather than specifying a skin for each page.

The explanations for the FileIO error problem on 1and 1 in other threads on this forum include your theory about 'Medium Trust;' a DNN issue randomly preventing the application from correctly mapping to the application subdirectory, resulting in the FileIO error whenever the incorreclty mapped path to web.config cannot be opened; and a 1and1 issue with AJAX, which purportedly might be resolved by turning AJAX off.  Take you pick.  I've tried every combination of possible fixes that have been posted to these forums without success.

For the time being, I believe that 4.7 simply CANNOT be run with confidence on 1and1.  If I found out differently, I'll certainly post back to this thread to let everyone know.

Thanks for your reply.
