If I use the latest dotnetnuke portal code (rev 4), I can connect the the sql database using sql authentication only if I connect to sql 2000.  If I try to connect to sql 2005, using the same procedures to create a user login and associate it to the database, I receive the following message:

A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared memory Provider, error 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL server, Error: 233)

If I research this issue on MSDN, I find no solutions, but more than one person with the problem. Since the DNN portal uses sql authentication, I'm stumped.  Any assistance would be sincerely appreciated.

Solution is relatively simple.

(1) make sure that the configuration manager has NAMED PIPES enabled

(2) make sure the installation of SQL server 2005 allows for "Mixed Authentication"

If you make both of these changes, it resolves the issue

Check that you are providing the correct information in the server= section of the connection string.  For example I've got SQL 2000 installed default and SQL 2005 as a named instance as well as SQL 2005 express as a named instance.  So for connecting to SQL 2000 if my server name is eagle it looks like server=eagle.  For SQL 2005 it's server=eagle/SQL2005 and for express it's server=eagle/SQLEXPRESS.
