Without admitting guilt (ahem), the DNN Server's drives were all reformatted, so a new install is necessary, but the SQL Server database was on another server and seems to be intact.

Questions:

  1. Can the database be reattached and all the content restored?
  2. If so, would the same DNN version be required?
  3. If so, can I verify the version used by inspecting the database?
  4. If so, where do I look?
  5. Is there something special I need to do besides get the connection string pointing to the data with the username & password correct?

Thanks.

you can restore the site from database with a few limitations:

  • start from scratch with an empty database
  • you need to install the same DotNetNuke version, this is equal to highest number in Versions table
  • you need to install the same modules and versions (see module definitions table). make sure, that IDs are equal between original and rebuilt database
  • you need to install same skin & containers
  • try to change database connection to original database, site shall look the same
  • you will not be able to recreate the passwords. Reget access for the host following this procedure: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/183/Default.aspx
  • manually reset passwords for all other users

Thank you very much. That's more work than I wanted to do, but much less than starting over. Your support is highly appreciated.

For sure, frequent backups would have reduced the effort to restore significantly

I followed the instructions as best I could, built the new site, installed the modules & set their IDs, but when I installed the skin, I found it had been updated and the original was not available. After connecting to the old database, everything was there, and by reapplying the new skin and containers, it took its shape again, with HTML content in their modules. So far so good.

However all other types of modules are broken (without content) and there are no files from the previous site in the File Manager. Am I stuck recreating all this from scratch? How and where would something like a jpg, gif, or pdf be stored after its uploaded to the File Manager?
