so I downloaded the INSTALL package, unziped into directory suggested.  Where's the client, how do I start the designer I saw in the online demo?  I need to develop locally on my PC then upload completed work to my separate web server.  Need a few obvious things (to you guys) thrown my way to get started.

many thanks in advance

dnn is a web application, which means the client is your browser. It needs IIS and sql server to run. You need to make sure that IIS is installed on your local pc, next make sure that the asp.net framework is installed (if you asp.net 2.0 was already installed and you needed to install IIS, you need to reinstall ASP.net 2.0). Next you need to install SQL server express. If all is installed, create a new virtual directory (eg. localhost/dotnetnuke) in IIS, and have it point to your unpacked dnn installation. Make sure that the ASPNET (or network service on Vista) user has full rights to this directory. Next browse to localhost/dotnetnuke.

There are a few catches here. if you are planning to move to a full domain, most of the internal links and images you create will point to the wrong directory (because you are running in a virtual directory locally). Also, it is less then trivial to move a complete installation (especially the database is not very easy)

Why not just start live? DNN has enough features on board to "hide" your site while you are working on it. EG, all pages are only visible to administrators, unless you specify otherwise.... It will save you a lot of trouble...

Thank you VERY much for the feedback.  I actually just dug in and completed the framework's requirement installs and a first time successful installation of DNN as well, while waiting for this reply.  I was pleased at the ease.  I needed to force my self out of the fat/local client way of thinking

You are correct.  I do have a production web server which is where I currently move all developed/tested content to (currently simply using older FrontPage environment).  So at current migrating/publishing my changes are very easy.  THE ONLY limitation I have is that I only have FTP access to that sever; no OS logon privs.  But if browser use is what I need to work, and FTP and pop over simply config file changes then I guess I still can go this route?  Right?

If I do have the option however to develop/test/hide/make available pages when ready all on the production server I will definetly go that route.  This is not a business critical app/site and from all that I've read in the past few weeks on this and other sites, it just is not point/click drag/drop yet to migrate from one environment to another.  So thanks for the suggestion I will do that.  I saw that cool little checkbox which allows me to hide a page until I am ready to release it.

Thanks again for taking the time to help a beginner.
