Well I am frustrated to tears with my update to 4.8. I was using 4.5.5 successfully had a fun little private site up for me and my friends. I made a rash decision to update after looking at the change log and seeing a few performance updates for 4.8. I backed up my files but forgot to backup the SQLServer. Everything seemed to go ok with the update until it redirected me from the install/update screen to my now fantastic yellow asp.net error screen:

Exception Details: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null.
Parameter name: type

Well its been about 5 hours of trying to fix it even reverted back to the old version, it didn't work because of lack of restoring on the sql end, and tried to update again. All for the same result. I don't know what else to do, I am now the proud owner of a dedicated asp.net error page that me and my friends can enjoy.

I hope others have had better luck.

Digging around on the forums I found someone who fixed this issue by deleting all dlls in the bin folder and then copying them over from the upgraded bin. After trying that I made some progress instead of a wonderful yellow and white asp error page I get a nice and neat error msg.

A critical error has occurred!

Could not load the assembly 'DotNetNuke.Authentication.LiveID'. Make sure that it is compiled before accessing the page.

I have sense reinstalled this LiveID provider with no success...

current hours spent working on upgrade = 9

Where is it installing the LiveID.dll? It should be in the bin/Providers directory and nowhere else. I suspect that when you tried to reinstall it under Host->Host Settings->Authentication Services that it didn't actually install. The packager module won't install the a version if that version already exists in the database.

I had many problems with a recent upgrade.  The thing that saved me was using WinMerge to compare the Installation package to my actuall upgraded site.  There were several missing and extra files for some reason.

I do not have a bin/providers directory. I have tried intalling the LiveID_01.00.00 package through "/install/install.aspx?mode=installResources" and it said I was succesful but it didnt do anything. Is there anyway to disable the LiveID with out loging in?

Site has been down for 12 hours now after trying to upgrade to 4.8
