Ok, I'm VERY new at DNN. So please bare with me.

I'm attempting to update my company's DNN portal. Its currently on 3.2 and I'm trying to get it up to 4.8. I've had a few issues on this, so I've decided to just go version by version till I get there. No biggie.

The issue is that we once had a guy come in and write custom modules for us and in the config file he made some customizations to profile properties by adding a few more properties. Now I have upgraded to 3.3.0 and I no longer have that area in the new web.config file to match the old one to. These profile properties are needed for all of the custom modules that were created, but I havent been able to figure out where they should go now.

I tried to use the user manager to add the properties, but its not the same, the custom modules still error. I havent a clue as to what to do or where to even start with this stuff.

Can anyone offer advice of ANY kind?

First of all to upgrade you don't have to go version by version that would probally take forever.  Follow the instructions on this site

http://blog.strohlsitedesign.com/Blog/tabid/66/EntryID/102/Default.aspx

It worked for me when I was doing my upgrade.  It will give you the correct upgrade path.

Second when upgrading DotNetNuke there are a few things you need to make sure you do

first copy your machine Validation keys over to your new web config file from your old web.config file.  There are two of these one for encryption and one for decryption.  Second copy your connection strings from your old web.config file to your new web.config file.  in version 3.2 the connection string is loced in one place make sure that when you are upgrading to a 4x version you copy it in both places that are required.

As far as the changes that where made to your web.config file to get your modules working can you be more specific on the properties that where changed.

Most of the modules I write require me to add a connection string to the connection strings section of the web.config.  This is done so that they can connect to an sql database that I am working with.
