I have the following error (when going to localhost/dnn/install/installwizard.aspx) :

-----------------------------------------------------------

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Access to the path 'E:\website\web.config' is denied.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to
Disable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

  • If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
    1. the [SERVER]\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.
  • If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
    1. the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I have tried adding appropriate permission access in security tab for both ASPNET and NETWORK SECURITY (not sure which to use - so did both),
I am using II6 Windows 2003

Also,
I have the following error when going to localhost/dnn/install/install.aspx :

---------------------------------------------------------------

Keyword not supported: 'epix\sqlexpress;database'.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.ArgumentException: Keyword not supported: 'epix\sqlexpress;database'.

Source Error:

The source code that generated this unhandled exception can only be shown when compiled in debug mode. To enable this, please follow one of the below steps, then request the URL:

1. Add a "Debug=true" directive at the top of the file that generated the error. Example:

  <%@ Page Language="C#" Debug="true" %>

or:

2) Add the following section to the configuration file of your application:

<configuration>
   <system.web>
       <compilation debug="true"/>
   </system.web>
</configuration>

Note that this second technique will cause all files within a given application to be compiled in debug mode. The first technique will cause only that particular file to be compiled in debug mode.

Important: Running applications in debug mode does incur a memory/performance overhead. You should make sure that an application has debugging disabled before deploying into production scenario.

---------------------------------------------------------------

 any ideas?

regards,

mark.

Part 1) Open IIS manager, find your website right click properties|directory tab and note the application pool. Now right click on the application pool|properties identity tab to verify what account asp.net is using. (with IIS6/WS2003 it should be NETWORK SERVICE) Give the permissions to NETWORK SERVICE in your e:\website folder.

Part 2) Verify your connection string in web.config against the default...

name="SiteSqlServer"
connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLExpress;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"

I hope this helps.

Forgive me for editing - the forum editor is doing some wacky formatting on me.

thanks Dwayne,

re: IIS manager, right click properties|directory >>

my application pool is just "DefaultAppPool"

It doesn't seem to possible to right click on DefaultAppPool in directory tab and can't see it appear anywhere else i'm affraid.

(already granted full permission access in security tab for NETWORK SECURITY ). -
[still no joy]

mark.

Further info,

just done a re-installation of sqlexpress
(found this guide useful for installing sqlexpress 2005: http://www.petefreitag.com/item/458.cfm )

Unfortunately, I am still getting the same error:

.....................................
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified
.....................................

I have enabled all pipes etc in configuration.
I have edited web.config until I am blue in the face (literally - as our server room is in a cold air con room).

Is there any way to test the connection to the database from our web server?
I know the server name is correct (i can ping it no problem).

also
Could it be a bad idea to mess around with web.config too much - with regards to confusing IIS?

p.s.
(if anyone replies to this i will be on hol for a week, unable to reply)

regards,
mark

You need to know which app pool the website is using first, then go to the app pool properties to find the indentity being used.

Also, recheck the permissions in e:\website\whatever? And we'll start from there.

Obviously you have missed something simple along the way. Do you have any other information or errors?
