Hi,

I am a DNN newbie also and have the HTTP Error 403 (Forbidden) problem when trying to access the site in the browser via localhost. Have down loaded DNN 4.9 and followed all instructions carefully. I have Win XP Sp2, Dot Net Framework 1.1 and 2.0, SQL Server (MSDE) and IIS 5.1.

Created new SQL db with Teratrax with new user and full dbo permissions (dbo owner). In IIS created new virtual directory (dnn_site_1) pointing to the physical C:\inetpub\wwwroot\dotnetnuke for content. Configured virtual directory default doc 'default.aspx', turned on 'anon acess', selected ASP.NET 2.0, created connection strings in the web.config file.

When trying to configure the physical directory C:\inetpub\wwwroot\dotnetnuke however after right clicking 'Properties' I find the in the resulting Website Properties page there is no 'Security' tab available to add ASP.Net 'Modify' permissions as required by the instructions.

Try as I might I cannot find this 'Security' tab in the Properties page for the physical directory (which is not configured as an applicatiopn, although I have tried that also) or in the virtual directory

Am now a bit stumped and would really appreciate some assistance, thanks

microsoft likes to make things simple for us, so they invented something like "simple filesharing". This is turned on by default, and will prevent you to set exact permissions on folders. You must turn this feature of first. Check here for more info: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307874

Hi Erik,

Thanks for that. I have done as you suggested, checked the Microsoft site out and made the changes and there is still no 'Security'  tab in the Web Properties page.

However there is now a 'Sharing and Security' item in the right-click context menu. When clicked it takes you to the Web Properties/Sharing page where  I have enabled 'Share this folder' and seen a name come up (that of my virtual directory) in the Share name box.

I have variously tried both "Maximum allowed"and "Allow this number of users" (set it at 1) and then clicked"Permissions". This brings up a page "Permissions for (virtual directory name), with Group or user names" (Everyone) and then in the Permissions for everyone there is only "Full Control", "Change" and "Read", no mention of "Modify"

I have enabled all these, cleared all my temporary files, restarted and then tried to open the virtual directory via localhost in my browser. After all this I am still getting the dreaded HTTP Error 403 message.

I have also disabled "Read Only" in the "General" tab, although I notice is reselected on subsequent visits back to the Web Properties page.

Any more ideas?

I have run out of them and am beginning to wonder whether it is worth persisting with DNN. I wonder how I am going to get it installed on a remote webserver when I can't get it going on my local machine?

Anyway thanks for your help
