Hello,

I was wondering if there is anyway to lock out users during the upgrade process?  I have several live dotnetnuke instances to upgrade and I'm concerned that when a user browses to the site they will receive the upgrade progress report as opposed to the http request I will  send to each instance.  Which makes it difficult for me to validate that the install went smoothly.  If I set the AutoUpgrade app setting to false in web.config will that allow any users to browse the site while the upgrade is underway and only allow the http request to  http://www.mydnninstance.com/Install/Install.aspx?mode=Upgrade kick off the upgrade?

Thanks in advance,

jberganz

simply place an app_offline.htm file in the root of the site, it stops all asp.net processing (see http://www.mitchelsellers.com/blogs/articletype/articleview/articleid/55/dotnetnuke-upgrade-tips-lessons-learned.aspx for some other similar tips)

I just wanted to verify that the app_offline.htm needs to be removed before the upgrade is kicked off right? I sent an http request to my upgrade url (http://
mydomain.com/Install/Install.aspx?mode=Upgrade) while the file was still in place and received the contents of the html file as opposed to the progress of the upgrade.

Thanks in advance,

Jose

You need to change web.config and set autoupgrade="false".  Then you can be sure that the user will not see the upgrade message, and the upgrade will only start when you tell it to by going to http://mydomain.com/Install/Install.aspx?mode=Upgrade

Note that when you copy the upgrade files, that users will see the "under construction" page, until after you have manually completed the upgrade.

JK.

ps yes, app_offline must be removed before you start to upgrade.
