Good Evening,

I would like to install DNN 4.9.1 on a dedicated server running Windows 2003 and SQL Server Express.  In reviewing the documentation and forums, several questions are still unanswered:

1.  Is it recommended to download and install DNN on my development machine, develop the site first, then move it to the host server?  My development machine is running SQL Server 2005 , not Express.

2.  Which installation package should be used for development vs. for host server?

3.  If it is recommended to install DNN on developer box, how do I go about moving the site when its time to share with my client?  Or, is it better to just create a subdomain on the hosting server for client to review as I work?

Thanks, in advance, for any/all assistance and "gotchas".

a development box is valuable to create custom modules and skins, which you may package afterwards and transfer to the live server, i.e. your alternative 3. would be, how you setup the target site for your client.

Sebastian,

To confirm, you would recommend setting up the client's server and developing the site directly on it?  In addition, I should setup DNN on my developer box and use that setup to create any custom work, which can then be imported into the server's DNN environment?

Thanks,

Sid

Sid,

simple answer: yes. If it is a new site or you may use a child domain of the target domain (like new.mydomain.com for www.mydomain.com), developing on the server will bear the least surprises and you shall be able to discuss easily with your client progress and expectations.

A local copy is sometimes helpful for staging and testing new modules or sth like this, you do not want to play on the production server yet.

For development of modules and skins, you should use a local installation, where you have easy file access and debugging options.

Sebastian,

This is a big help.  Thank you!!  Besides the forums, can you provide links to any sites that might provide good help for newbies?

Thanks Again,

Sid
