After a 10 yr hiatus from dealing with server side issues, I am attempting a DNN4 install on a WinXP Pro machine with .NET 2.0 and MS SQL Express.

I am kind of stuck with how to set up the database and web.config file.  I haven't had much luck with the standard install document (in the docs package from teh sourceforge download) - I can't quite tell what hooks to what, and which things are arbitrary (like the name of the DNN database in SQL?) vs. system defined/given (like the name of the ASP "user"?).

Is there another document out there to follow along with a idiot-level step-by-step install - none of the posts I have found point to such a doc.

Thanks in advance.  Creative flames are always welcome :)

Well, no responses, but I probably didn't deserve any.

I just got 4.00.02 installed.  Yay!  No VS, No VWD, just .NET2, SQLExpress, and DNN 4.

God bless Google - every error I got from the install process was discussed somewhere on the net.  I am still not sure what I did right finally.   I think all my trouble was truly in setting up databases and getting the connection string right - nothing I would recommend to someone who has never done any ASP programming.  This is not a 24 period of my life I would like to relive or wish on anyone else.

If anyone has any specific questions, I would be glad to give screenshots of my install....

Darin... firstly, I hope you managed to get your portal up... because if you did then there's hope for me I think I am in the same boat you were... mostly I am not sure what I actually need in my web.config file, and don't really know where to start. If I was able to see yours, i'm sure I could translate it to my (proposed) setup. Would you mind sending it to me? If not, please send to damowicks@gmail.com Thanks in advance. Cheers. Damian.

I did get the site up after about 20 hrs of work.   I will send the webconfig to you directly.

Mine is for SQLexpress - the webconfig file is a bit more complicated for SQL server

I have been working for days on getting this program to work.  I have SQL Server 2005,  server 2003 and VS 2005.  I have setup everything like the install document said but still get errors.  When i get an error i look it up and try to fix it and usally that specific error goes away but is replaced by a new one.  Then after trying to fix the errors it loops back the the first error.  So I suck and need lots of help as I am new to SQL Server and VS 2005.  I think my biggest problem is the database and webconfig so if someone could send me some type of help I would love it.
