Hi Folks

I'm pulling my hair out - what's left of it that is.  I have seriously been messing around with trying to get DNN installed for days.  I'm running Windows 7 with IIS 7.  I have a system to write over the summer and want to keep it local during development.  My many years of experience exclusively relate to desktop applications and in recent years computer game programming.

I have followed as many tuts as I could find but always get to a point where something is not fully explained or not fully understood by me.  I really need a kick start, call it a dummies guide to getting up and running.  Ultimately, I want to use Silverlight with DNN.  For now here is a summary of what I have done/need.

DNN 5.xx downloaded, unzipped; IIS 7 enabled; (a lot of virtual directories created, deleted)

I want to use MS SQL 2005 Express - all setup OK and am using VS 2008

Amended the web.config several times to relate to my system.  Tried to access DNN using http://localhost/mysite.  I get all kinds of errors relating to the web.config file.

Please help!

AFAIK there is no final version of DNN 7 atm, we will check out issues, as soon as it becomes available, thank you.

Thanks for your reply Sebastian.

Look, I really appreciate it, but it is typical of what I find online.  What does "there  is no final version of DNN 7 atm, we will check out issues, as soon as it becomes available, thank you." actually mean?  I'm looking to implement DNN 5 for Win 7.  Is that what you mean?

Win 7 is so much like Win Vista, but working as Vista should have worked.  So there must surely be an install guide based on that.

So again - please help.

Thanks

I think what Sebastian meant to say was that there's no final version of Windows 7.

What kind of errors are you seeing? Michael Washington did a write up for installing on Vista. I haven't looked at IIS under Windows 7 myself so I'm not sure what differences there are.

I suspect your issue is that you're using the wrong account, windows 7 (iis 7.5) uses a new account for application pools, and you will need to grant permissions for that (see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/2164/Update-on-DNN-running-on-Windows-7.aspx)

please note, sebastian is also correct, win 7 is still effectively a beta, so expect problems with it and you can't rely on software such as sql express/vs.net 2008 working as expected. Typically MS release updates for programs when the final version of the OS comes out e.g. when vista came out both sql 2005 and vs.net 2005 had to have updates to work as expected
