I need to upgrade a source code installation from 4.9.4 to 5.1.1 and I'm looking for the proper method to complete the upgrade. I tried just copying the upgrade release files over the website folder and performing the upgrade by loading http://localhost/DNN/Install/Install.aspx?mode=upgrade. The upgrade ran without error and everything seems to work correctly minus a few backwards compatibility issues with some containers. I then copied all files from the source release, MINUS the website folder, over my existing DNN installation. The problem is that I cannot build the website. I get errors on several files that no longer exist in the new directory structure (ex.- /admin/Security/AuthenticationSettings.ascx, /admin/Security/WindowsSignin.aspx).

I'm thinking that the proper method to upgrade a source code installation may be as follows:

1. Upgrade current installation as I did above by copying files from upgrade release over the existing files in the DNN Website directory

2. Delete the ENTIRE DNN folder and copy entire source release to DNN folder. Then copy my web.config and skins back to the DNN Website folder.

I'd imagine this is a fairly common process. I've seen a ton of information on upgrading, but nothing on upgrading a source code installation.

please delete Library folder only, otherwise you may have issues with module and loose your portal files.

You may afterwards simply unzip the Source Package - if you are using app_data/database.mdf, you need to backup and restore it separately.

<p>&#160;But the problem is that after I upgrade the website, I&#160;can't build it. I&#160;can run it, but I can't build it because of all of the old files that didn't get deleted. So I would have to manually build, find page that is causing an error, delete it, build, find page that is causing an error, delete it, etc. The upgrade doesn't cleanup all old files.</p>
