Hi guys,

My client just emailed me (havent heard from them in a while) and said theyd received an email from their host saying they feared their DNN site had a hack attempt.

I checked the site, and it was running something like version 4.05 - so I said Id upgrade it, like I do all my sites to the latest 4.X version.

Upon uploading the files, I ran the upgrade script, and it said everything was a success, click here to access your portal.. and now I get an error basically saying "There has been an error" with the DNN Logo etc. Nothing more explanitory than that!?

This is what Im getting..

Client is upset, and Im lost as to whats happened! Any ideas guys!?

Thanks!

The URL being passed just on opening the site is..  /Default.aspx?tabid=37&error=Object+reference+not+set+to+an+instance+of+an+object.&content=0

If I check the site with the install.aspx?mode=none - I get the correct versions for the site and db...

if the site was running a DNN version prior to DNN 4.6.2, you need to adopt web.config manually, see here.

I always suggest for large versioon spans to upgrade in multiple steps, like (4.3.7, 4.4.1,) 4.6.2 and last to 4.9.4.

Thanks for that Sebastian. Appreciate the link.

I dont think it was THAT old a version I upgraded from. I beleive it was a 4.8.6? or something similar?

But anyway, would you recommend simply saving my skins, making a list of the modules I need, and installing a completely new set of 4.9.1 files and seeing if that gets the site going? unfortunatley its a hosted environment (not all of us are lucky enough to have our own servers).

You could check the event log by using a database T-SQL Query to see if this gives more info.
Otherwise I would suggest you restore from backup - check your old DNN version(!) - and attempt upgrade to DNN 4.9.5 or even DNN 5.1.2

If you need to practice the upgrade you could restore a local copy to your localmachine and keep going until you get it right.

Your hosting provider should (hopefully) do a restore - but nothing beats having your own local backup as well.
