Hello,

I want to upgrade a DNN site from 4.09.00 to the latest version. When I'm trying to figure out the best way to do this, by browsing through posts in this forum, I get a bit confused.

After reading, I am not sure if it is necessary or even recommendable to follow the upgrade path from 4.09.00 via 4.9.5 to 5.1.2 or directly from 4.09.00 to 5.1.2.

Could someone please tell me the best way to deploy the upgrade or direct me to the general documentation about performing upgrades on DNN sites/modules, if that is available?

Thanks,

Kind regards,

Ron

Hi Ron,

I upgraded from 4.8.3 to 5.1.1 and then to 5.1.2 but only because the release of 5.1.2 was right after I did the 5.1.1 upgrade. Not sure of your scenario but if you have access to the server or are able to do full backups of the website directory and db, then the upgrades pretty simple and less intimidating if you can just roll back in case something goes wrong. . Once my backups were complete, I downloaded the 5.1.2 upgrade package, stopped the site in IIS, unzipped the package over my existing website directory, restarted the site in IIS and navigated to www.somewebsite.com/Install/install.aspx and the site went through the upgrade without any problems. The only problems I did have were afterI accessed the portal and found some 3rd party modules that needed upgrading.

Hope this helps.

Paul

Hi Ron,

Ditto what Paul said above. In the case you do not have access to directly stop and start IIS (you are using a shared hosting environment), make sure you take the application offline first. This seems to be one of the biggest issues with upgrading I have seen. Although this process is still not perfect, especially with these early version of DNN 5. I have some sites that perform 100% fine with version 5 full installations and upgrades and others that do not.

I have a couple of free tutorials here...

http://www.tutorialzonline.com/Courses/DNNInstallations/DNNUpgrade494512HP/tabid/207/Default.aspx

I hope that helps. Keep plugging away as DNN version 5, once it is installed and working correctly is well and truely worth it!

Cheers,

Trev.

Thank you guys,

I managed to do a succesfull upgrade. There were two weird things:

I didn't see the Upgrade screen after going to the website, it just showed up and I was holding y breath until I saw in the Host Settings that the upgrade was succesfull. (Also noted that the site loads faster..)

The icons in the menu were missing, but I solved that with help of another post in this forum, that explained running a SQL script to fix that.

We are testing the site now, but so far it looks fine.

Thanks again,

Ron

Thank you for the tutorials, saved my day!!!

Found two things lacking there, though.... not too hard to figure out, but still.

1) before updating you must remove the app_offline.htm file

2) The link to do the update leads to the INSTALLWIZARD-file. It's the link, not the text, that is wrong. But I guess it would be somewhat bad if people go through the install wizard. Once I did what it READ and not what the content of the link was, it went smoothly.

Works fine for upgrading straight from 4.7.0 to 5.1.2 as well.

thanks a lot for the help!!!!
