Hi,

The hosting company I am with now, uses Plesk as a controlpanel. I found out that a controlpanel has more influence to the hosting environment than I originally thought: it is not possible to install DNN in the root of the website, so URL's to start the dnn website would be www.domainname.com/dnn in stead of www.domainname.com.

This is not really what I want. The support department of the hostingprovider gave me some links to instructions how to make it possible anyway, by installing it in a subfolder and after that moving it to the root, making some changes in the database etc.

I am wondering what solutions others have working working with Plesk. Do you move installations, use redirects or are there any other solutions? Should I move to hostingprovider supporting another controlpanel, like Hsphere, which I have used before?

Thanks,

Ron

Ron,

I know of many people that are using Plesk and DNN on the root.  Personally the best way around it is to maje sure that your hosting provider will offer support for this.

3Essentials and PowerDNN, both hosting companies that I recommend use Plesk and support root installations.

Hi

I run multiple sites under plesk and it can be done but you need the hosting providor to allow the network service user full permissions to the httpdocs folder. If they arent familiar with DNN or not willing to provide this for you I would suggest by choosing someone else.

Cheers

It doesn't matter what directory you install DNN into.  You could have the installation 50 subdirectories deep if you wanted to and still have the domain name read as www.domainname.com with no subdirectories.  You just have to set up the Portal Alias properly and point the domain name to the subdirectory.  It's really that easy.  I've done it in Plesk with DNN installed in the httpdocs, and in other hosting setups that don't use Plesk.  There is a third option in the DNN web.config that strips subdirectories from the domain name url as well, but I've never used that so I can't say if that is an easy fix, too, or not.

Anyway, it doesn't matter where you install it, I'm not sure why it even matters to anyone where it's installed because you can always point the domain name and portal alias's to the subdirectory and you don't end up with any kind of seo problems with redirects or anything like that at all.  If you do, you probably need to find a better web host!

Some Plesk control panels don't allow access to the IIS settings needed to change the domain name to point to the proper directory, but I've found that at least at 3Essentials they are willing to do that for you quickly and at no charge.  I do have to admit I really don't like Plesk, it just over complicates everything and unless you are using it daily it's easy to forget everything you need to know to use it.  I like the Webhost4Life control panel, it has everything you need in a very simple to use structure that is extremely intuitive and easy to use for those who's main job doesn't involve accessing the hosting control panel more than once in a great while, and you can access everything and set it yourself without having to ask support to do it for you.  It's probably a lot to do with what you are used to and what type of control you want or need.

Thank you all.

I am actually quite happy with the service and pricing of the plans this web host offers, but you are right that they don't have much experience with DNN. I am going to try some of the suggestions you made. If it gets to complicated, I'll have to find another webhost I guess.

Thanks,

Ron
