The web site address I set up using GoDaddy defaults is:
            www.site_name.org/dotnetnuke
and clients need to enter that address to access my web site.  If they enter simply
            www.site_name.org
a "page not found" error appears.

How can I change my address from
      www.site_name.org/dotnetnuke     to
     www.site_name.org ?

in the root of your godaddy hosting environment just put a file that redirects to the subdirectory. You can do the redirection client side with javascript or the head refresh tag, or server side with an aspx file that does a 301 redirect
