Hi

I recently decided to purchase a hosting package.  They don't support dnn but i was hoping to install it anyway.  I've used dnn in the past but have always just used sqlexpress on one of my own servers.

Turns out that if i want to use a MS SQL db i have to pay extra, alot extra.  I do have unlimited MySql dbs though.

What are my options? I've done some searches and found out it is possible to use MySql using 3rd party data providers.  Would dnn be able to use the db in the App_data folder?

Officially DNN currently supports a provider model where you can use any database that a provider is written for.
Only Oracle seems to have an updated provider written for it.

Not all modules are written using the provider model, and those won't work with anything other than MS SQL. So using an non-ms sql database will limit the number of modules available for purchase/use on the site - requiring a lot more custom coding to just duplicate functionality of existing modules.
From what DNN Corp has posted [somewhere], only about 400 users are on an Oracle database, making it a very small percent.

IIRC - DNN is going to stop doing the provider model and update it's data access and begin to require MS SQL as it's database. Changing to MSSQL only will allow DNN to take advantage of database specific optimizations and other things to improve the product that are prevented or not easily implemented with the provider model.
