Is it safe to upgrade from 5.1.1 to 5.5?  What is the earliest version 5.5 is tested to upgrade from?  I understand that I should backup, stage, upgrade in a test environment, etc.  But can I upgrade a site from 4.9? 5.1? What is the cutoff?  I know there were major additions to DNN.  Is there a better method of upgrading (copy the full install over the old site and just manually make the additions and changes to webconfig?)

Hi I have updated 5 different DNN installations this morning. The oldest version was 4.9.5. But before I updated to DNN 5.5.0 I checked the 3rd party modules for any upgrades, found some modules needs to upgrade before upgrading to DNN 5.5.0 I hope your upgrade will finish without any trouble.

Any version earlier than 4.09.05 should first be upgraded to 4.09.05. From 4.09.05 and 5.xx.xx upgrade directly to 5.05.00.

Use the 05.05.00 Upgrade package which intentionally does not include a web.config file. When upgrading any version from 04.06.02 and above, DO NOT make any changes to the site's existing web.config file as all necessary changes will be done for you during the upgrade - much less chance for error and much easier that way!

As always, make sure that you make backups of BOTH the site's filesystem AND database before attempting the upgrade - just in case you have to roll back.

If you have installed the XML module, be sure that it has been upgraded to the latest version 04.03.05 before upgrading DotNetNule to 5.03.00 or later.

If you have installed the Chat module, note that it is not compatible with DNN 5.4.x and later without manual modification and should be uninstalled. See Chat forum for further information.

If you have installed the Gallery module (including Gallery 04.03.01 RC which addressed ASP.Net 4.0 issues), note that it will display a module load error due to a change in the DotNetNuke 05.05.00 AddFolder method. I am working on a fix for that and several other issues.
