if you attach the database to the SQL server in SQL Server Management studio or VS, you need to use the other connection string type using database name, username and password, see: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/1202/DNN-SQLExpress-SQL-Server-Management-Studio.aspx

Ok I have uninstalled everything to do with sql (I think the original problem was because there was also a copy of sql server compact installed) and reinstalled only SQL Server 2008 developer edition. I can connect to the server via server management studio and visual studio 2010. Now when I try to configure sql connection in dnn I get this error with no message

Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 20

IT'S ALIVE!!! Finally after 5 days of problems with this move the site is fully functional. After reinstalling SQL I realized that I could not add the NETWORK SERVICE account to the permissions for SQL.  For some reason it is not in list. So I changed the appPool for the site to run with the local service which is by default already given permissions to run in SQL. DNN connected and tried to run the DB upgrade but gave a long list of "undefined - success" errors. I rebooted the server and tried to hit the site but it kept redirecting me back to the url for the development server.  No one ever told me I had to change the PortalID alias in the DNN DB.......Could this have been the problem all along?????   Sebastian thanks for all you help, it is nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of (my wife doesn't know what I am talking about when I say URL, so sad to say she can't help).  I will take this thread to the grave with me.  BTW is there a article on how to properly move a DNN site from one server to another? If not I think that would be a great help. Thanks again!

Until next time,
Tracey
