Sebastian, After I replied to your suggestion I found where I was supposed to add the alias. Thanks. Still doesn't work but I appreciate your help.

Just so I'm clear..
you installed the site locally, you can "browse' to it via IIS but when you try to do this from a browser outside of IIS the localhost site fails to load?

By any chance are you using IIS 6 on your local machine?
If you are what version of Windows are you running?

please make sure, you configured your DNNTest folder as IIS application (in IIS manager)

Hi all, I am using IIS 7 and it seems to have installed itself as an application. I am using the Microsoft Web Platform installer on an existing test web server which is running Windows 2008 R2 standard operating system. I have other applications/websites that run on the server already, just can't seem to get dnn to run. I am going to delete the installation and try it again. I will post back if I still have issues. Thanks for all the help.

I'm in the habit of uncommenting the "use port number" in the web.config. Not sure if that's still necessary on a localhost development or not. It seems to be for me using VWD Express 2005, but haven't tried it without in some time now. I do like that with 5.5.1 the friendly url's now work on localhost.

I like using Visual Web Developer Express because you don't have to mess with IIS or even have it installed, but that may not work so well for your setup. Anyway, try uncommenting the port number thing in the web.config before you install DNN and it will set up the alias automatically for you. Maybe that will help.
