I got the same error when upgrading to version 5.6. To fix it I had to restore back to version 5.5.1, then install the Telerik module version 5.6, then install the DNN version 5.6 upgrade.

Problem fixed!

I ran the following:

http://mywebsiteurl/install/install.aspx?mode=installresources

and the rest of the installation completed without incident.  I still have no idea why the installation failed initially but this seems to have fixed the problem.

After thinking about this half the night it appears there is some sort of permissions issue or .Net Framework Trust issue going on with many Hosting Providers.
I'm glad you got your upgrade fixed.
I'm not sure we can do anything about this though as Hosting Provider permissions and .Net Trust settings are completely out of our control.

I tried running that line:
http://xxxxl/install/install.aspx?mode=installresources
but received the very same error.

Just out of curiousity I tried two other DNN websites of mine and both got the same error. But on the sites where I installed the Telerik module first then the DNN upgrade went just fine.

So, the pattern I am seeing is that those failing sites have been around a long time since version 4.0 of DNN and have been through many upgrades. So, I tried it on a website that was originally installed with version 5.5.1. It took the upgrade just fine without having to install the Telerik module first.

It appears to me that somewhere along the way the Telerik module was not updated with the standard upgrade packages, but version 5.6 asumes that the module is "caught up" with the correct version.

It's been a while since I did a clean install, but I seem to remember a phase where it checks permissions and reports if everything is OK.  Are there additional permissions that aren't detected?  It seems as though every 2nd or 3rd version upgrade that comes out, I test it first on a local copy of my site, it works fine, then it blows up on the production site and I end up having to either have the host restore from backup or spend quite a bit of time trying to figure out what went wrong and fixing it manually.

I think you're right.  My site has been on DNN since it was a VS2003 project.  If memory serves, the last time I remember doing a fresh clean install was when DNN switched to the VS2005 "Web Site" project format.  I don't remember the transition from 4.x to 5.x requiring a fresh install.
