Ok...somewhat of a newbie question.  I've got a DNN 5.5.1 installation with a single portal with content loaded on Server A.  I want to move this portal and its content to Server B.  Server B has DNN 5.5.1 up and running for the domain's portal, but with an "empty" database (both servers running SQL Server 2008 Express).  Is moving the content from Server A to Server B done via a database backup?  Can it be this simple? Seems that a lot of configuration would be carried over on the restore that will mess up Server B's setup.

no, a database backup and restore will overwrite any existing entries. In theory you could do a merge replication but I don't believe sql express supports that. You might try using portal templates (wiki page http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Wiki/tabid/1409/Page/Portal-templates/Default.aspx ). note: the enterprise version of DotNetNuke has a content staging function which allows content to be syncronised across sites.

Thanks for the suggestion Cathal on portal templates and DNN's Enterprise Edition Content Staging function.  That said, I'm supprised that there's no "easy" way to move existing content from one install of DNN's Community Edition to another (even at a backup/restore level).  In my instance, Server A is a Win2K3 server, and Server B is a Win2K8 R2 64bit server with more ram and disk, so I'm really only moving to another server for more available resources.

I like the idea of replicating data, but as you mentioned, replication in SS2K8 Express is not possible as a publisher.  But what I can do is import data via Integration Services, but I need to know what data to import/move.  Looking at the DNN database, is there a specific set of tables I could move data from, into the new "empty" DNN 5.5.1 database to in effect copy over the content (pages, users, etc)?

if you want to move a DNN installation, you should take care of keeping integrity of all files in the installation folder and the database. you shouldn't try moving single tables, this will break references and violate referential integrity.
