i tired to setup a new installation of DNN and now the auto is grayed out and i cant connect to database. Had this issue when i first started, did everything i did to fix it the first time, but now it does not work. Has anything changed that i dont know about? I do have other sites up and running and they dont seem to be having a problem.

use manual and specify details for the database connection properly. Auto will only be enabled if DNN is able to use default (SQL Server Express installed and configured for user instance databases), usable with Windows Server account used by ASP.Net (as configured in your App Pool).
